IT'S ONE OF THE GREATEST MYSTERIES OF MODERN INDIA: WAS GUMNAMI BABA, ALSO KNOWN AS THE ASCETIC OF UP'S FAIZABAD, ACTUALLY NETAJI SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE? SUBHRO NIYOGI, SAIKAT RAY AND A TEAM OF REPORTERS TRACK DOWN SOME PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY INTERACTED WITH HIM AND ARE CONVINCED THAT IT WAS NONE OTHER THAN THE CHARISMATIC LEADER HIMSELF, LIVING UNDER AN ASSUMED IDENTITY. READ ON TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY

A moment that lasted a fraction of a second 33 years ago is etched so vividly in Sura jit Dasgupta's memory that a mere recollection triggers a myriad emotions. Dasgupta's facial muscles twitch, lips quiver and eyes turn misty as he strives to utter something, stutters and then gives up.

After several minutes of internal strife, Dasgupta composes himself. “He was seated before me like every day when I had an urge to see him. I stole a glance and was so dazzled by the glow that emanated from within that I had to immediately lower my gaze. It is a sight I will never forget,“ he mumbles.

The “he“ Dasgupta refers to was Bhagwanji, an ascetic in Faizabad, UP , who very few “knew“ to be Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Here was the man who had been pronounced dead 37 years ago, a death millions refused to believe. Many felt he would return to India one day to finally solve one of the most baffling mysteries of

The local INA was formed in 1942 with Japanese support. It sought to liberate India from the British and consisted mainly of Prisoner-of -War from the British Indian Army. Subhas Chadra Bose, who lead INA from 1943 onward, laid a foundation stone for the monument in July 1945. The Urdu words inscribed on the monument read : ITTEFAQ (Unity),  (ITMAD) faith and KURBANI (sacrifice).

NATIONAL CONVENTION - NEW DELHI 06 AUG 2015 - BRIEF CONCEPT

THE NATIONAL CONVENTION 2015 WAS HELD AT DELHI ON THE 6TH AUG 2015 ON LEGACY OF NETA JI AND HIS AZAD HIND FAUJ.

Neta Ji Subash Chandra Bose, the most chrismatic leader of India's freedom struggle took up the mantle of leadership at a time when the strategies and methodsdevised  and  practiced  by  Mohan  Das  Karam Chand Gandhi reached a dead end in the early 40s .While the Mahatma  successfully  achieved  the elusive solidarity among faction ridden society and a degree of hope among the masses  for  ultimate freedom from foreign rule, some day , it was Subhash who forged the the final weapon to cut through British  colonial  power.  Yet,  the  narrative  of  state  India  built  in  1947 and  thereafter  was    entred  on Gandhian pacifism. 'De Di Hamein Azadi Bina Khag Bina Dhal  Sabarmati Ke Sant Toone Kar Diya Kamal'. This does not bear historical Scrutiny . India paid for its freedom with the blood of 26000 Azad Hind Fauj  Soldiers .

This is the first occasion when an anti British politician has acquired a hold over a substantial number of men in theIndian Army and the consequences are quite incalculable . ........The cabinet Should consider very carefully what to do withhim. If he could be disposed off without being sent back to India, I am sure it would be a good thing.

Lord Wave/I, Viceroy of India in a note to Secretary of State for India - Aug 1945

Maj Gen (Dr) G D Bakshi SM, VSM (Retd)

"He was certainly always a nationalist. For him, the In dian Nation was an idea, the very antithesis of the princel ystates and the caste system and linguistic conflicts, and above all, the very antithesis of Jinnah's theory of two nations."
- Anton  Pelinka on Netaji Subhash -

- Michael Edwards

"The contribution made by Netaji S C Bose towards the achievement of freedom in 1945 was no less and perha psmore important than that of M ahatma Gandhi."
- R.C. Majumdar, Historian

"The Sikhs may try & set up a separate regime and that will only be the su-,rt of a general decentralization andbreakup of the idea that Ind ia is a country, whereas it is a subcont inent as varied as Europe . The Punjabi is asdifferent Fom a M adrasi, as a Scdt from an ftalian. The British tried to consolidate it but achieved nothingpermanent. No one can make a nation out of the Eq«ator."
- Field Marshal Claude Auchinlek

STRATEGIC DIRECTION OF FREEDOM STRUGGLE

Where a nation state is going, depends a great deal on where it has come from. What were its origins? How did itgain its freedom? How were its seminal institutions formed? What was its national narrative on formation? Whowere its heroes? 68 years  after independence, the time has come to take a dispassionate view of our recenthistory and reassess the role of the key dramatis personae. This is not an exercise in digging up graves, but anessential exercise about recognizing who we are and what do we stand for. The Indian Freedom struggle had thrownup a galaxy of great leaders who were talented men of great vision and stature. In retrospect one of the tallestamongst them perhaps was Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

"There was, in Bose's perception, a linkage between how India gained independence and what India would do afterindependence. How India gained independence would determine if India would be able to surmount the powerfulefforts being made to undermine her unity. At this stage
{1942} , Bose's mind was not only on the ensuing struggle, he also gave much attention to the question of the cohesionand modernization of Indian society. Without these, he felt, India's political unitywould remain vulnerable."

- Sitanshu Das, Subhash Bose: A Political Biography

The Use of Force: The key question about the freedom struggle is basically what actually worked? What was therelative contribution of the use of force versus the Non-violent Agitational approach towards India achieving herindependence. In terms of violence - there are two landmark events - the 1857 Mutiny and the first war of independence that it unleashed.

SOME  DISCUSSIONS  ON OROP

Justice Katju Tears Into Government's OROP Announcement

In a write-up soon after the announcement of OROP by the Defence Minister in which VRS personnel were left out from the scheme of things, Justice Markanday Katju called the Government declaration a

"Biblical `Peace of God which passeth all understanding'".

Katju wrote:

"Firstly, where did the issue of VRS or premature retirement come into the picture, like a jack in the box, or like Banquo’s ghost in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, or Caesar’s ghost in Julius Caesar?

There was no inkling about it earlier from the side of the Govt. Everyone knows that an army officer can take premature retirement with pension on putting in a minimum of 20 years service ( for jawans the qualifying period is 15 years ).

How can such persons, who comprise about half the officers be deprived of OROP ?

This had not even be discussed earlier. Suddenly, OROP has disappeared for the premature retirees, like the Cheshire Cat disappearing in Alice in Wonderland, or some devata becoming ‘ antardhan’, and instead a `thenga ‘ has been shown to the premature retirees."

Justice Katju further wrote that "once the principle of OROP was accepted, where was the difficulty in revising pensions every 2 years as demanded? This is the age of computers, and with an appropriate software in fact pensions can be revised almost instantaneously, with a touch of a button. Why does it require 5 years? In fact the ex servicemen were too liberal in modifying their genuine demand for annual revision to a 2 year revision. Perhaps they thought they should give some latitude to the government for it to ‘ save face ‘."

Thirdly, Justice Katju asked,
"what will a one man judicial commission   do ? It will be a joke."

Katju hit the final blow with characteristic, Brechtian ruthlessness:

"It is said, and I may be pardoned for the crude analogy, a Commission is like a commode. First you sit on it, then there is a report, and then the matter settles down".

Katju rounded off by commenting that

"the Govt. of India’s announcement today, instead of solving the problem, has made things murkier than ever. Vinashkale Vipreet Buddhi..."

YES EVEN MURKIER THAN BABUs UNDERMENTIONED OFFICIAL PASSTIME
