A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

----------------------------------------------------------

The one hundred and second day of the Ukrainian nation's heroic confrontation with the Russian military invasion continues. Former Deputy Head of the US European Command, Lieutenant General Stephen Twitty said : “I think the war in Donbass is turning in favor of the Russians. They don't put a ton of combat power in there with infantry and tanks. They have gathered their artillery and that is how they succeed. Russia has a hell of a lot of fighting power, much more than the Ukrainians. And there is no way the Ukrainians will ever destroy or defeat the Russians. And I will say more, the Ukrainians will never have enough combat power to kick the Russians out of Ukraine. So what will the end of the game look like then?""

The capture of Severodonetsk - the informal capital of the part of the Luhansk region managed by the authorities in Kiev - remains the most important goal of the Kremlin's invasion in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian defenders continue to drive the Russians out of Severodonetsk, destroying their equipment. This was reported by Luhansk regional military-civil administration Serhiy Volodymyrovych Gaidai with reference to the 57th separate motorized infantry brigade named after Kosh Ataman Kostya Gordienko.

As the head of the Luhansk regional military administration Serhiy Gaidai noted earlier, Severodonetsk is conditionally divided in half. The Russians gave up all efforts to fulfill the task of Dvornikov (Rosgeneral) - to take the regional center or capture the "road of life" Lysychansk-Bakhmut by June 10. He noted that the invaders believed in their lies about the capture of Severodonetsk and did not expect such resistance. Gaidai assured that the city's defense is strong.

Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said that Ukrainian troops were "strongly resisting" the invaders in Severodonetsk. "It's hot there, the fighting continues… The only thing we can say for sure is that the Armed Forces are resisting strongly, because otherwise the city would have come under the control of Russian troops. We can say that very professional Ukrainian units are involved. The Russians wanted to go to the administrative border of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, but so far they do not meet the deadline and they are unable to implement this plan," - said Malyar.

The Ukrainians intercepted Russian orders. "The coming five days will be a hell of a time". The talks that were intercepted by the Ukrainian military show that the command of the Russian army was tasked with capturing Severodonetsk by 10 June and taking control of the important Lisichansk-Bakhmut route. Ukrainians predict that the next five days will be very hard for them. "We expect that in the near future they will throw all available reserves, all soldiers and weapons on Severodonetsk and the Lisichansk - Bakmut route. The coming five days will be a hell of a time. The opponent will increase the frequency of heavy artillery fire several times," assessed Serhiy Haydai, the head of the authorities of the Luhansk region, on the 1 + 1 television channel. As the politician emphasized, "The Russians will level everything with the ground, because they simply do not know any other tactics and cannot fight otherwise".

The road from Lisichansk in the Luhansk region to Bakhmut in the Donetsk region is an important transport route, enabling communication between the eastern regions and the cities of Dnieper and Zaporizhia, as well as the central and western parts of Ukraine.

A team of reporters for Spiegel International wrote that "The Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, fears that Ukrainian resistance could even be broken in the next four to five weeks. In a number of classified briefings in recent days, BND analysts have noted that while the Russians are moving much more slowly than they did at the beginning of the war, they are able to conquer small bits of territory each day. The BND thinks it possible that Putin’s troops could bring all of the Donbas under their control by August."

Ukrainian units are suffering critical losses in the battles for Severodonetsk, said the head of the National Center for Defense Management of the Russian Federation, Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev. According to him, in some units of the Ukrainian armed forces and nationalist formations, losses amounted to 90% of the personnel.

Russian Major General Roman Kutuzov was killed in battles near the town of Popasna in the Luhansk region. As Ukrinform reports, this was reported by Medusa. It is noted that Kutuzov died in the village of Nikolaevka. Information on which unit the general headed has not yet been released. In 2019, on the website of the Russian Ministry of Defense, he was listed as acting commander of the 29th Combined Arms Army. According to the report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Popasna direction , some units of the 150th Motorized Rifle Division of the 8th All-Military Army of the Russian Federation suffered significant losses. At least 50 percent of the personnel, weapons and equipment are involved.

Russian soldiers are trying at all costs to avoid a direct encounter with Ukrainian forces on the battlefield, the Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) said on Telegram. The possibility of surrendering to the defenders of Ukraine is discussed in the sub-units. According to HUR, this is happening despite the threats to prosecute the soldiers, preventing the desertion of Chechen militants, and the intensification of controls on, among others, by border guards. The communiqué stated that the command of the Russian 30th motorized rifle brigade of the 2nd Army was hiding mass desertions and threatening the soldiers with execution for attempting to escape. One of the brigade's sub-units was detained while trying to cross the Russian state border near the Szyjany crossing and forcibly sent to the zone of active combat operations.

In the first big interview since the start of the special operation, Vladimir Putin answered questions about the global food crisis, the political situation and US arms supplies. He noted that Moscow would “draw conclusions” if the United States sold long-range missiles for salvo systems to Ukraine. “We will also use our own means of destruction, which we have enough to strike at those objects that we have not yet struck,” the Russian leader threatened. “All this fuss over additional deliveries of weapons has only one goal - to drag out the armed conflict as far as possible,” Vladimir Putin assured.

High-precision missiles on the outskirts of Kyiv destroyed T-72 tanks supplied by Eastern European countries and other armored vehicles located in the buildings of a wagon-repair enterprise - the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported. "High-precision air-launched missiles destroyed the factory workshops, where military equipment damaged during the fighting was being repaired and restored for the Armed Forces of Ukraine." Several T-72s were eliminated with long-range high-precision air-launched missiles. Tanks and other equipment were located in the buildings of the wagon-repair enterprise. Two points of the Ukrainian capital were attacked with missiles in the early hours of Sunday.

The bombing of Kyiv was carried out from Russian Tupolev TU-95 bomber planes based on the Caspian Sea. It was around six in the morning when several shells hit two neighborhoods in eastern Kyiv, on the left bank of the Dnieper River. The explosions caused only one injury, according to the mayor, Vitali Klitschko, but significant material damage. The city had been calm for weeks after the previous attack, which left one dead in a residential building on April 28. A building about 150 meters long by 50 meters wide had been destroyed in the Darnitsia neighborhood. Trains and trucks used to export grain are repaired at the important railway junction in the Darnitsia neighborhood and at its plant, according to the head of the railway company, Oleksandr Kamishin. The other point attacked, the one that appears indicated as a repair shop for military vehicles and tanks, is about two kilometers away.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that over the last 24 hours, Ukrainian forces have counterattacked in the contested city of Sieverodonetsk in eastern Ukraine, likely blunting the operational momentum Russian forces previously gained through concentrating combat units and firepower. Russian forces committed in this area include personnel mobilised from the reserve of Russian-led Separatist Forces of the self-declared Luhansk People’s Republic. These troops are poorly equipped and trained, and lack heavy equipment in comparison to regular Russian units. The use of proxy infantry forces for urban clearance operations is a Russian tactic previously observed in Syria, where Russia employed V Corps of the Syrian Army to assault urban areas. This approach likely indicates a desire to limit casualties suffered by regular Russian forces.

General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Russians continues to suffer significant losses during hostilities on the territory of Ukraine. In order to replenish units, Russian invaders continue forced mobilization measures in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

In the Volyn and Polissya directions, the Russians did not take action. The main efforts of the units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus continue to focus on conducting intelligence and engineering equipment positions. During the inspection of combat readiness of units, special attention is paid to the development of tasks to overcome water obstacles and the interaction of airstrikes with the crews of helicopters of army aircraft.

In the northern direction, the Russians were intensively guarding areas of the Ukrainian-Russian border in the Bryansk and Kursk regions. They carried out mortar shelling of civilian infrastructure in the area of the settlement of Gremyach, Chernihiv region. In the Slobozhansky direction the Russians continued shelling of divisions of Defense forces from tube artillery, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, mortars and tanks. In order to support the offensive, they were rapidly rebuilding transport and railway infrastructure in the temporarily occupied territories.

The use of electronic warfare continued to create conditions that make it impossible for UAV units to use UAVs. In the Kharkiv direction, the Russians conducted an active defense, focusing its efforts on maintaining the occupied borders and border areas north of the city of Kharkiv. In order to increase the stability of the defense, they conducted engineering and fortification equipment positions and mining approaches to them. To restrain the actions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, Russians conducted intensive artillery and mortar shelling of the positions of Ukrainian units. In addition, the Russians fired on civilian infrastructure in the areas of the settlements of Tsyrkuny, Ruski and Cherkasy Tyshky, Staryi Saltiv. They fired missiles at the Korotych settlement.

In the Slavic direction, the Russians's efforts focused on continuing the offensive in the direction of the settlement of Slavyansk. The Russians fired on civilian infrastructure in the areas of Chepil, Dibrivne, Virnopillya, Dovhenke and Bogorodichne. The Russians tried unsuccessfully to conduct offensive and assault operations in the areas of the settlements of Bogorodichne and Dovgenke. In the Donetsk direction, the Russians launched air strikes on civilian infrastructure in the areas of Slovyansk and Lysychansk. In the Lyman direction, with the support of artillery, the Russians resumed the offensive near the village of Svyatogorsk, with significant losses in manpower, weapons and equipment. THey conducted assault operations in the direction of the settlement of the Old Caravan. The fighting continued.

In the Severodonetsk direction, the Russians fired mortars, artillery and multiple rocket launchers at units of Ukrainian troops and civilian infrastructure in the settlements of Severodonetsk, Lysychansk, Toshkivka, and Ustynivka.

In the Bakhmut direction, Russians units shelled the settlements of Komyshuvakha, Mykolayivka, Belogorivka, Pokrovske, and Dolomitne. The Russians used assault and army aircraft near Bakhmut and Berestov. The Russians carried out assault operations in the areas of Belogorovka and Mykolayivka. The Russians suffered significant losses in manpower and equipment. There was no success, and the fighting continued. In the Avdiivsky, Kurakhivsky, Novopavlovsky and Zaporizhzhya directions, the Russians did not conduct active hostilities. They conducted shelling of civilian infrastructure in the settlements of Zaitsevo, New York, Toretsk, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, Uspenivka, Orikhiv and Kamyanske.

Russians struck with operational-tactical and army aircraft near Novoselivka, New York, Marinka and Kamyansky. In the South Bug direction, the Russians fired on the positions of Ukrainian troops, trying to fight the counter-battery. In order to clarify the position of Ukrainian units and correct the fire, they conducted air reconnaissance using UAVs. The Russians used artillery in the areas of the settlements of Nikolaev, Pribuzke, Luch, Blagodatne, Shiroke and Tokarevo. The Russians carried out assaults in the area of the settlement of Bila Krynytsia in order to restore the previously lost position. After the fire, the Defense Forces of Ukraine retreated to their former positions.

Major General Igor Konashenkov of the Russian Defense Ministry announced: " the command posts of the 81st and 95th air assault brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as 6 areas of concentration of manpower and Ukrainian military equipment, were hit during the day. As a result of the strikes, two launchers of the Osa-AKM anti-aircraft missile system, two combat vehicles of multiple launch rocket systems, three depots of rocket and artillery weapons, as well as a US-made AN/TPQ-50 counter-battery radar were destroyed.

"Operational-tactical and army aviation hit 3 command posts, 65 areas of concentration of manpower and military equipment and 3 ammunition depots; In total, as a result of air strikes, more than 350 nationalists, 10 tanks and armored vehicles, 2 Grad multiple rocket launchers, 9 artillery pieces, 14 special vehicles, as well as tanks with fuel intended for the group of troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were destroyed as a result of air strikes in the Donbass, and two ammunition depots.

"During an air battle, a MiG-29 aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force was shot down; - Russian air defense systems in the Odessa region shot down an An-26 military transport aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force, carrying weapons and military equipment. Also, 10 unmanned aerial vehicles, including Bayraktar TB2, were destroyed during the day. In addition, two Tochka-U tactical missiles were intercepted, three Ukrainian shells of the Uragan multiple launch rocket system were shot down; Missile forces and artillery hit 46 command posts, 123 artillery and mortar units in firing positions, as well as 498 areas of concentration of manpower and military equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine."

The Spanish government is ready to supply Ukraine with heavy weapons, including tanks and anti-aircraft missiles, the El Pais newspaper reported. Until today, the kingdom has donated ammunition, grenade launchers, machine guns and personal protective equipment to Kyiv. It is planned to supply Leopard tanks and a battery of anti-aircraft missiles for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the newspaper notes. Spain also offered to train the Armed Forces of Ukraine how to handle tanks. They will probably be instructed on the territory of Latvia.

According to Andriy Melnik, the Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin , the refusal of the German authorities to supply the Kiev regime with Leopard-1 tanks and Marder infantry fighting vehicles is a “shame” that will “go down in history . ” As Melnik noted, the German side "cynically" refuses to supply Kiev with the named types of heavy weapons. It should be noted that earlier Melnik repeatedly criticized Berlin for its refusal to supply German weapons to the Kyiv regime and once called German Chancellor Olaf Scholz "offended liver sausage".

A team of reporters for Spiegel International wrote that "Scholz and his government are clearly playing for time. Initially, they didn’t believe that the Ukrainians had a chance against Russia and sent the bare minimum necessary for plausible deniability, starting with 5,000 helmets. Later, it was a mixture of incompetence and a lack of will – and a desire to hide behind its allies. Not to mention the refusal to take international leadership. It seems likely that Scholz would never have delivered any weapons at all without massive pressure from abroad and from within his own governing coalition.... Why the chancellor only acts late and under immense pressure – if he acts at all – is a riddle to many. "

FDP party member Markus Faber, was defense policy spokesman for his party’s group in parliament, until he had to step down recently after he criticized Scholz in public. "The chancellor’s hesitancy is frequently described in Germany as prudence," he says. "But prudence these days involves protecting as many innocent lives as possible from the Russian aggressor. Germany can and must provide more help. For example, 100 Fuchs armored personnel carriers, 100 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, 100 Leopard 1 battle tanks or 200 trucks could be quickly made available." Only the approval of export applications stands in the way, he says.

The Greek authorities have secretly transferred or are about to transfer an "incredible" amount of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine , wrote the Greek edition of Pronews. In total, the list of transferred weapons includes 122 infantry fighting vehicles BMP-1 with all the ammunition for machine guns, 15 thousand 73-mm shells, 2.1 thousand 122-mm rockets, 20 thousand Kalashnikov AK-47 assault rifles, 3.2 million rounds of 7.62 mm caliber, 60 FIM-92 Stinger MANPADS, 17 thousand 155-mm artillery shells, 1.1 thousand RPG-18 anti-tank grenades, the newspaper writes.

On 27 February, Athens supplied Ukraine with 40 tonnes of "defence equipment" via the territory of Poland. Since then, the Greek government has repeatedly stated that it will no longer be sending new weaponry to Kiev not to undermine its own defensive capabilities. The announcements of new shipments of Greek heavy weapons to Kiev have drawn harsh criticism from the opposition, which has accused Athens of undermining national security and hiding details of deals from the population.

Austrian Colonel Markus Reisner believes that Western countries have started delivering heavy weapons to Ukraine too late, they are currently being delivered to the war zone too slowly due to damaged infrastructure. He stated this to the German newspaper Die Welt. "Deliveries of weapons from the West began too late and therefore heavy weapons cannot be delivered to the target in a timely manner," he said. According to him, Ukrainian servicemen in the conflict zone receive only light weapons systems. Reisner points to the damaged railway infrastructure, which makes it difficult to transport military equipment to the Donbass. "Heavy weapons, such as howitzers, tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, do not reach there directly or too slowly," he said.

By autumn, a number of territories are expected to join the Russian Federation. This was stated by the scientific director of the Center for Ethnic and International Studies, editor-in-chief of the magazine "Archon" Anton Bredikhin. “A plan for the integration of South Ossetia, the DPR and the LPR into Russia will soon be adopted. Tentatively, this will happen in the fall, closer to the single voting day in the Russian Federation. And a referendum will be held in these republics, and also, I do not exclude that on the territory of Abkhazia, the Kherson region, the Zaporozhye region, and possibly in other liberated territories, which may become Nikolaev, Odessa, Kharkov regions. And I do not exclude Belarus at all. Therefore, actions for integration with Russia are directly tied to a common line and, accordingly, will go all at once, and not in such a way that in June one country will join Russia, in July another, in August a third. Everything will be concentrated and coordinated within the framework of a single procedure and will be the same as the signing of the treaty on the creation of the USSR on December 30, 1922", said the expert.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reacted to the words of the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament Laszlo Köver, who announced that President Volodymyr Zelensky had mental problems, and suggested that the chairman of the legislature present a mental health certificate. According to the Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga , epoch-making events are a “trigger” for politicians such as the speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, Laszlo Kever , to which “fascist DNA responds from within . ” He stated this after the speaker of the Hungarian parliament questioned the adequacy of the mental state of the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, Sibiga's words are quoted by the Ukrainian media.

The reconstruction of roads destroyed during the war requires 900 billion hryvnias. This was announced during the national marathon on June 5 by the first deputy head of Ukravtodor Andriy Ivko. "Currently, 900 billion hryvnias are needed to restore the roads. It will take 2-4 years to restore the road infrastructure. We believe that it would be right to attract funds frozen in Russia for this restoration," Ivko said. He also said that 24,000 km of roads and 302 man-made structures - bridges, overpasses, overpasses - have been completely destroyed in Ukraine so far.

Russian Defense Ministry, Major General Igor Konashenkov reported that in total, since the beginning of the special military operation, 189 aircraft, 129 helicopters, 1,114 unmanned aerial vehicles, 330 anti-aircraft missile systems, 3,416 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 470 multiple rocket launchers, 1,778 field artillery guns and mortars, as well as 3,419 units of special military vehicles.
